Achilles Tendon Rupture Recovery: Why Protection and Progressive Loading Matter

An Achilles tendon rupture is different from ordinary calf tightness or uncomplicated tendon pain. Early management needs to protect the healing tendon and follow the specific plan given by the fracture, orthopaedic or physiotherapy team.

Protection comes first

During the early phase, a boot or brace is commonly used to keep the tendon in a protected position. People should not add stretching or unplanned ankle loading simply because the pain has reduced. The tendon can still be vulnerable while biological healing is taking place.

Then rebuild calf capacity

Later rehabilitation progressively restores ankle movement, walking quality, calf strength and balance. Heel-raise capacity, gait, hopping and running drills can then be developed according to the person's stage of healing and clinical guidance.

Return to sport requires patience

Running, acceleration, jumping and change of direction place large loads through the Achilles. These should be introduced gradually, with attention to next-day symptom response, calf strength and movement control rather than a date alone.

MSF pathway: Achilles rupture recovery belongs in the MSF tendon and post-operative pathway, with clinician guidance where required. Sudden calf pain, marked swelling, chest pain or breathlessness needs urgent medical advice.
