Return to Sport Is a Process, Not a Single Date

A return-to-sport decision should not be reduced to 'it has been six weeks, so I am ready'. International sports medicine consensus describes return to sport as a continuum rather than one decision at the end of rehabilitation.

Return to participation

You may first re-enter modified training, rehabilitation drills or lower-level sport participation. You are active again, but not yet necessarily ready for unrestricted sport.

Return to sport

The next stage is returning to your chosen sport. This does not automatically mean you are performing at your previous level or tolerating full competition demands.

Return to performance

The final stage is rebuilding the capacity and confidence required to perform at or beyond the level you need. Strength, power, endurance, movement skill, workload tolerance and psychological readiness can all matter.

Use criteria, not time alone

The exact criteria depend on the injury and sport. Useful information may include symptom response, range of movement, strength, functional testing, sport-specific drills and the ability to tolerate training loads without a meaningful setback.
