Home Visit or Online Physiotherapy? Choosing the Right Rehabilitation Support

Updated: 7 days ago

Home-visit and online physiotherapy can both support rehabilitation, but they solve different problems. The right choice depends less on which format is generally 'better' and more on what you need assessed, how safely and confidently you can move, and how much individual support your recovery requires.

When a home visit can be particularly useful

A home visit can be valuable when travelling to a clinic is difficult, when the home environment is part of the problem, or when the physiotherapist needs to see how you actually manage everyday tasks. Walking around the home, stairs, transfers, getting in and out of bed or a chair, balance and the use of mobility aids can all be assessed in the setting where they matter.

Home-based physiotherapy may be especially relevant after surgery, following a neurological change, with reduced mobility or frailty, after falls, or when pain and weakness significantly limit daily function. Hands-on examination or treatment can also be used where clinically appropriate.

When online rehabilitation can work well

Online rehabilitation can work well when the presentation is appropriate for remote support, the main need is education and exercise progression, and the person can move safely enough for the physiotherapist to observe useful tasks by video. It can also reduce travel time and make follow-up easier when the rehabilitation plan is already established.

Within the MSF ecosystem, online support can include structured education, workbooks and progressive MSF Method programmes that focus on Mobility, Strength and Function between reviews.

A hybrid approach can combine the advantages of both

Many people do not need to choose one format forever. An initial home physiotherapy assessment can establish the diagnosis, safety considerations, functional baseline and rehabilitation plan. Follow-up can then combine home visits, online reviews and structured MSF Method work according to progress and preference.

Five questions to help choose your starting point

Consider whether you need hands-on or neurological assessment; whether travelling is difficult; whether your home environment affects the problem; whether you can perform movements safely on camera; and whether your main need is diagnosis, individual treatment or progression of an established rehabilitation plan.

Where MSF Physiotherapy fits

MSF Physiotherapy provides home-visit physiotherapy across South East London alongside online and hybrid rehabilitation. The MSF Method extends rehabilitation through structured programmes and resources so suitable patients can continue building Mobility, Strength and Function between appointments or through self-directed pathways.

If you are unsure which level of support fits your problem, the free MSF Pain & Movement Screen can help identify an appropriate starting route. New severe symptoms, rapidly worsening weakness, acute neurological change, significant trauma, chest pain, severe unexplained breathlessness or other urgent concerns should be medically assessed rather than managed through an online programme.

MSF Physiotherapy is led by Mohammed Sillah-Freckleton BSc, MCSP, HCPC, AACP, Chartered Physiotherapist with more than 15 years of NHS and private-sector rehabilitation experience.
